Mission statement

At the Chair and Institute for Rail Vehicles and Transport Systems (IFS) research and teaching are closely linked. Genuine and up-to-date teaching is based on scientifically established as well as practical research results.

Our teaching mission is the education of future specialists and executives for science and industry. The target branch is the railway sector, characterized by the rolling stock manufacturers, the suppliers and the transport companies. Our aspiration is that our master graduates are capable of solving technical problems on their own based on solid fundamental engineering knowledge by means of scientific methods. Furthermore, our doctoral graduates should acquire team management skills and be able to recognize and develop research possibilities by themselves.

Our research mission is to investigate and develop methods, processes and products that improve the attractiveness and competitiveness of the railway system, including the interfaces with other means of transport.

Our vision is to be the leading scientific institution and the principal contact in the field of railway technology. As research facility of one of the most distinguished technical universities in Germany and member of one of the biggest faculties of all German universities, we are prepared to handle particularly challenging projects and research tasks in cooperation with other research centres at the RWTH Aachen University.

Moreover, we consider it to be our commitment to support the regional industrial companies in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia technologically and scientifically.
